Warm V's Cold Roofs

August 31, 2016 sarah poynter

A lot of garden rooms are built using flat roofs, so I will begin by explaining the different types of roof construction for a flat roof. A cold flat roof is constructed from the inside out using plasterboard, vapour barrier membrane, insulation between the rafters and air space is left then board then a waterproof membrane, which in garden room construction is typically an EPDM rubber layer.

A warm roof system will differ because the insulation will sit directly underneath the waterproof membrane so from the inside you will see the joists and a layer of wooden boards or plasterboard then the vapour barrier then insulation then another layer of board and then the waterproof membrane.

The principles are the same if your roof is a flat or a pitched roof the only difference will be the addition of batons to carry the slates or tiles if you are having a this type of waterproof layer.

By using a warm roof construction method it means that you have the option of seeing a vaulted ceiling detail which can be a really nice feature to have, especially if you are going for a more Nordic feel to your building.

Spacetwo can offer you both warm and cold roof options on either a flat or a pitched roof depending on the look you require. Many of our roofs are vaulted providing a beautiful and natural finish to your garden room and providing you with the option of having a finish that many other companies don’t.

Spacetwo are also different in that we use only natural and permeable materials, which means that all our insulation is made using only wood fiber. This means that its kinder to both the environment and you because no chemicals are being used and it also means that we don’t have to use any foil membranes because everything is already permeable so there wont be any build up of moisture meaning no damp or condensation build up, which is really important of you want to use your space for a garden office, cinema room or artist/music studio where this will be a really important factor, especially when housing electronic equipment or things like paper.

We will be happy to talk through with you further what each of these options will mean for you when planning your garden room.
